Tailor-Made Data Centre Migration

Infosys - Data Centre Migration - Case Study

The Challenge

Reckitt Benckiser Group plc is a British multinational consumer goods company headquartered in Slough. Formed in 1999 with over 35,000 employees, their brands include the likes of Dettol, Strepsils and Veet. Engaged via our partner Infoysys, we were approached with a large scale migration requirement.

  • Required a fully managed migration, taking total responsibility
  • Phased migration spread over 3 months across multiple sites
  • Patching 124 and 160 cables per phase
  • Large populated rack moves
  • Working over 2 countries

The Solution

Planning and Project Management

Technimove’s migration methodology is designed to focus on minimising downtime, reducing risk and guaranteeing the efficient delivery of server migration projects. We assigned a dedicated Project Manager to work alongside Infosys to plan and prepare critical documentation and client plans for the project through a series of conference calls and meetings.

Due to the critical nature and quantity of the equipment, it was decided to phase the project over three months. This was to ensure risk was minimised as much as possible whilst ensuring the client experienced no downtime.

A Technimove audit is part of our best practice approach to migrations, we audited each environment 6 weeks prior to the first move.  With the audit complete we were then able to confirm the scope of the project and the connections needed to be replicated in the new environment.

The Migration

On the day of each migration, Technimove engineers arrived onsite 45 minutes prior to the start of the migration to sign in, and to prepare packaging material for the racks.

Once onsite, the racks were handed over to Technimove to systematically Decommission, and wrap in a rack jacket for protection.

Once the racks were secured in the pre-fuelled GPS tracked Mercedes truck, Technimove travelled directly to the destination site via the safest and shortest pre-planned route.

Once at the Datacenter, the racks were removed from the trucks and installed in line with the destination rack plans. Once in place the racks were recommissioned in line with the patching schedules.

Technimove undertook final checks before handing the equipment back over the client for the testing to commence ahead of schedule.

The Result

We ensured that the migration was delivered and we achieved all of the goals for the project. From the very beginning, the procedure we had put in place through our project management processes ensured the safe migration of their servers.

As a result, we delivered above and beyond expectations by;

  • Delivering exceptional cabling and professionalism

  • All devices installed and connected on average within 3 hours per phase
