The Challenge

Daisy Group, formerly known as Pipex Communications, approached Technimove to undertake a large UK based migration project that was critical to the business.

  • Required a fully managed migration

  • Migrating a total of 2,300 servers

  • Migrating client’s critical information

  • Park Royal to Docklands

The Solution

Planning and Project Management

Understanding the importance of maintaining business continuity and ensuring that downtime was kept to a minimum, Technimove assigned a project manager who was engaged in the initial planning ahead of the migration along with supporting specialist technology teams. This was in place to understand the requirement at an infrastructure, application and program delivery level which included risk assessments, method statements, mitigation, communication and change management planning, as well as the creation and completion of a comprehensive Migration Project Schedule.

From all the information collated, Technimove were able to ensure they resourced and planned the migration accordingly to ensure both downtime and risk were kept to a minimum. Due to the large quantity of devices to be relocated, Technimove planned to carry out the project over 7 separate phases, migrating between 300 to 350 servers per day to ensure minimal impact to the business.

The Migration

On the day of each phase, Technimove engineers arrived onsite 90 minutes prior to the start of the migration to sign in and prepare packaging material.

Once onsite, the devices were handed over to Technimove to systematically De-rack and wrap in anti-static bubble wrap for protection, before being placed into purpose built, foam lined, server flightcases.

Once the flight cases were secured in the pre-fuelled GPS tracked Mercedes trucks, Technimove travelled directly to the destination site via the safest and shortest pre-planned route.

Once at the Docklands, the equipment was unpacked and installed in line with the destination rack plans.

Technimove undertook final checks before handing the equipment back over the client for the testing to commence ahead of schedule. This process was repeated for all remaining 6 phases.

The Result

In partnership with Daisy, Technimove ensured that the multi-phased critical migration project was delivered on time and within budget. The methodologies Technimove implemented through project management processes ensured the safe migration of the client’s critical equipment. As a result, Technimove delivered above and beyond expectations by:

  • Migrating all 2,300 devices on schedule

  • Minimising impact to the business

  • Taking full ownership of the project, allowing business continuity.

Daisy were extremely impressed with both the pre-migration planning and the smooth execution of the relocation and continue to utilise Technimove as their migrations partner globally and have done for over a decade.
