Secure, compliant and low risk infrastructure change delivered with clarity and control.
Background
The client is a leading global technology solutions provider operating across large enterprise and public‑sector environments. This project took place across two UK locations: the collection site at Linford Wood and the destination facility in Hamilton.
The work formed part of a mixed requirement involving both IT asset disposal (ITAD) and a targeted physical IT migration of selected storage hardware.
Technimove has supported this organisation for several years across a variety of data centre and infrastructure transformation projects.
Project Driver
The client required a coordinated programme to:
- Remove and securely dispose of redundant infrastructure.
- Migrate two key devices to a new facility.
- Ensure all data‑bearing components were handled in line with strict compliance and WEEE regulations.
Collection timings needed to take place within a weekday window of 08:00–11:00, with no disruption to ongoing operations.
Customer Challenge
Operational Challenges
Key risks identified at the outset included:
- Ensuring secure handling and disposal of all data‑bearing assets.
- Managing safe removal within an active business environment.
- Maintaining end‑to‑end traceability and chain‑of‑custody records.
The project touched business‑critical hardware, requiring the client to shut down systems ahead of Technimove’s arrival to avoid operational impact.
Technical Complexity
Technical challenges included:
- A mixed estate of servers, network devices and storage arrays.
- Multiple vendors (Cisco, Viptela, Nimble) across 1U–4U form factors.
- Requirement for specialist, protective packaging using foam‑lined flight cases.
- Secure, GPS‑tracked transport.
Constraints
The team worked within:
- Strict compliance and WEEE disposal requirements.
- A defined morning collection slot.
- Pre‑validated asset lists for accuracy.
- Lift‑only access with no stairs permitted.
Our Solution
Scope of Work
Technimove delivered:
- Decommissioning & de‑racking
- Secure packing & physical migration of two devices
- ITAD recycling & disposal for eight devices
- Offsite data wiping or shredding (NIST 800‑88 / DoD 5220.22‑M)
- Comprehensive documentation including disposal and chain‑of‑custody records
Equipment & Infrastructure
In scope hardware included:
- 1 × Nimble Storage Array (4U)
- 1 × 2U SAN
- 3 × UCS C220 M3 servers
- Cisco 3750X switches
- Cisco ASA 5512 firewalls
- 1 × Viptela vEdge device
- Mixed power and data cabling
All equipment was packed using anti‑static materials and secured in purpose‑built flight cases. Rail kits were labelled and transported individually.
Execution
Delivery was completed as a single‑phase operation:
- Engineers verified the full inventory onsite.
- Equipment was de‑racked, labelled and securely packaged.
- Hardware for migration was transported directly to the Hamilton site using a GPS‑tracked, solid‑sided Mercedes vehicle.
- Redundant hardware was returned to Technimove’s certified disposal facility for processing and destruction/wiping.
Technimove adhered to strict chain‑of‑custody processes at every stage, ensuring the client had full visibility.
Outcome
Immediate Results
Technimove successfully:
- Migrated all in‑scope devices to the new facility.
- Completed decommissioning, removal and disposal activities within the agreed timeframe.
- Processed all data‑bearing media using certified NIST‑aligned methods.
- Delivered full audit documentation, including disposal certificates and WTNs.
Client Benefits
The project delivered strong business and operational value:
- Reduced compliance and data risk through secure wiping/destruction.
- Full transparency and traceability with documented chain of custody.
- Environmentally responsible recycling under WEEE guidelines.
- Safe migration ensuring business continuity.
- Operational headroom created by removing redundant equipment.
