National Data Centre Day: What is a Data Centre? A Plain English Guide

A bank transfer, an NHS record, a supermarket's stock system - none of it happens without a data centre. Here's what one actually is, and how they work.

Almost every part of modern life now touches a data centre at some point. A bank transfer, a GP checking a patient’s NHS record, a supermarket’s stock system, a phone call routed over the internet. None of it happens without a data centre somewhere in the chain, whether that is a small enterprise facility or a hyperscale campus.

At Technimove, we have spent more than 25 years inside these environments, migrating, deploying, and integrating infrastructure across thousands of data centres for organisations including but not limited to Barclays, IBM, Accenture, and Equinix.

We have seen the full range of data centres, from single comms rooms to hyperscale halls, and worked with almost every major provider in the market. That inside view is why we think it is worth writing plainly about how these Data Centre facilities actually work, rather than leaving the conversation to emerging news headlines.

What Is a Data Centre?

For some people when they think of a data centre they think of an image of a windowless warehouse the size of wembley stadium packed with servers humming away 24 hours a day.

While for others it is simply the stuffy locked room or cupboard down the corridor from their office where the company’s server rack sits. Both images of a data centre are correct, but a data centre can be either of those things or  also quite a lot in between.

A data centre is simply a physical environment designed to house computing equipment, while also providing the power, cooling and connectivity it needs to operate. Everything else including its size, ownership model, location and level of resilience varies according to its purpose and requirements.

So Data Centre’s range in size and type?

Yes. It helps to think of data centres on a spectrum, from smallest to largest. We break these down for you below…

The server room.

Many businesses, particularly smaller ones, still run a server room or comms cupboard on their own premises. This often includes a few racks, some cooling and  a UPS for backup power. This counts as a data centre in the technical sense.

Colocation facilities.

These are shared buildings where multiple businesses rent space, power, and cooling for their own equipment, without owning or running the building itself.

This is where a large share of UK enterprise IT actually lives. It is also where Technimove spends most of its time, moving, deploying, and integrating equipment into these environments on behalf of our many clients.

Enterprise data centres.

Larger organisations particularly in financial services, healthcare, and government often run their own dedicated facilities which are sized to their specific workloads and built to their own compliance requirements.

Hyperscale data centres.

At the top of the scale sit the facilities built by the likes of Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. These are enormous, purpose-built campuses, often exceeding 100,000 square feet designed to run cloud services and increasingly AI workloads at a scale no single enterprise could justify building for itself. We also have extensive experience in deploying these hyperscale data centres.

A single hyperscale campus can contain tens of thousands of servers and draw as much power as a small town.

The differene between a comms cupboard and a hyperscale campus is vast but their fundamental role is the same: house the equipment, power it, cool it, connect it, and keep it running.

What is actually inside a data centre?

Regardless of size, every data centre is built around the same core components:

  • Racks of servers, the physical computers that store data and run applications
  • Networking equipment, switches and routers that move data in and out
  • Power infrastructure, including backup generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to keep systems running through an outage
  • Cooling systems, ranging from standard air conditioning to the direct liquid and immersion cooling now used for high-density AI hardware
  • Physical security, from access control to CCTV, given what is stored inside
  • Fire suppression, usually gas-based rather than water-based, since water and live electrical equipment do not mix

Data centres are classified by resilience, not just size

One of the more useful but less understood distinctions in the industry is the Tier system, run by the Uptime Institute.

It rates a facility from Tier I to Tier IV based on redundancy and expected uptime not on how big or impressive it looks.Tier I: basic capacity, no redundancy. A single fault can cause an outage.

Tier II: some redundant components, slightly better protection.

Tier III: concurrently maintainable. Any single component can be taken offline for maintenance without affecting operations. This is the standard most business-critical workloads should sit on.

Tier IV: fully fault-tolerant, with redundancy across every system. Built for the workloads that genuinely cannot go down.

This matters because two data centres can look identical from the outside and offer completely different levels of protection. It is one of the first things we check when advising a client on where their infrastructure should sit.

Who keeps a Data Centre running?

A data centre is not a “set it up and leave” environment whatever its size. Behind every facility from a colocation hall to an enterprise server room sits an ongoing set of professional services that most people outside of the IT industry never see.

Below we break these services down properly because they explain why data centre work tends to be an ongoing relationship rather than a one-off project.

Design and Consulting

Before any equipment is installed, the facility or deployment must be designed around the workloads it will support. That means understanding current power, space and performance requirements, planning for future growth, determining the right level of resilience, and ensuring everything aligns with the available budget.

Getting this stage wrong is the most common reason businesses end up with a data centre that is either over-specified and expensive, or under-specified and constantly firefighting capacity issues.

Good consulting work also means giving straight advice on whether colocation, a private facility, or a hybrid approach actually suits a business rather than steering toward whichever is easiest to sell!

Installation and Integration

This covers the physical work of setting up servers, storage systems, and network infrastructure, and making sure it all functions as one coherent system rather than a collection of separately working parts.

It includes structured cabling, rack and stack, power distribution, and the testing needed to confirm everything performs as designed before it goes live.

This is also where a project most commonly goes wrong if it is rushed: a facility that looks complete on paper can still have latency, cooling, or failover issues that only show up under real load.

Maintenance and Support

A data centre’s condition on day one and its condition three years later are two different things without ongoing maintenance and support. This covers routine maintenance, firmware and software upgrades, hardware refreshes, and the troubleshooting and repair work needed when something inevitably goes wrong.

Facilities with a proper maintenance regime in place consistently see fewer unplanned outages than those that treat support as a reactive, call-when-broken service.

Security and Compliance

Physical and cyber security both matter from access control and CCTV through to the network-level protections that guard against the growing volume of cyber-attacks businesses face.

For regulated sectors, financial services and healthcare in particular, this also means passing the compliance audits that come with handling sensitive data, and being able to demonstrate that in writing when a regulator or a client asks.

Cloud Migration

Very few organisations are running purely on-premises infrastructure anymore, but very few have moved everything to the cloud either.

Most sit somewhere in between with legacy platforms that need to keep running alongside newer private and public cloud services. Migration work is about making that transition without downtime and data loss, and without leaving the business worse off mid-way through than it was before the project started.

Successful data centre operations depend on scalability, security, reliability, performance and cost control. When one area suffers, the impact is often felt across the board. Helping organisations get this balance right is what we do every day.

 

 

Data Centre Glossary

AI Workload

Computing tasks designed to run artificial intelligence applications, often requiring high-performance servers, GPUs and advanced cooling.

Cloud Migration

The process of moving applications, systems or data from on-premises infrastructure to public, private or hybrid cloud platforms.

Colocation (Colo)

A data centre facility where organisations rent space, power and connectivity for their own equipment rather than operating their own building.

Comms Room

A dedicated room or cupboard that houses an organisation’s network and IT infrastructure.

Connectivity

The network links that allow data to move between systems, users, locations and the internet.

Failover

The automatic transfer of services to backup systems when primary systems experience an issue.

Hyperscale Data Centre

A very large facility operated by cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon or Google, designed to support massive computing workloads.

Rack and Stack

The physical installation of IT equipment into data centre racks before configuration and testing.

Redundancy

Additional backup components or systems designed to maintain service if a primary component fails.

Server

A physical or virtual computer that stores, processes and delivers applications, services and data to users.

Structured Cabling

The organised cabling infrastructure that connects servers, storage and networking equipment within a facility.

Tier Rating

A classification system developed by the Uptime Institute that measures a data centre’s resilience, redundancy and expected uptime.

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Battery-backed equipment that provides temporary power during a power outage until backup generators or mains power are available.

Uptime

The amount of time a system, service or facility remains operational and available.

Workload

The applications, services and computing tasks that a data centre’s infrastructure is designed to support.
