Introduction

Due to infrastructure expansion, power and cooling requirements Technimove were approached by Red Bull Technology the Formula 1 arm of the global company Red Bull to provide resources and project management for an internal relocation project involving the relocation of 40 track side servers between two internal Data Centres.

Due to time constraints of the F1 Season Summer Break, the current Formula 1 Constructors and Drivers World Champions required a professional and experienced partner to complete the move ensuring that downtime was minimised and the relocation of the business critical equipment was carried out safely.

Technimove’s Solution

Technimove carried out a free site survey and project meeting to understand Red Bulls full requirement and the key drivers behind the project. The Red Bull technical team were highly capable and due to the level of the technical aspects of the project it was agreed that to utilise Technimove’s ‘de-rack to re-rack solution would enable the Red Bull team to focus their attention by removing the headache of the physical migration.

The Red Bull team were scheduled to work late into the night on a Friday, with Technimove being given a small time window in which to complete the project with a 09:00 start time on Saturday. Technimove’s team of engineers arrived onsite at 08:00 to be fully prepared for the 09:00 start time. The team began by preparing the collection environment before de-commissioning the pre-labelled server, storage and comms equipment.

All equipment was individually wrapped in anti-static bubble wrap before being placed in Technimove’s purpose built foam lined server flight cases. The equipment was then transported from Building 1 to Building 3 where the second Data Center resides. Technimove’s engineers then re-racked equipment in-line with the rack plans provided and connected power cables to devices which were not pre-programmed to boot with the connection of power. Technimove engineers also de-racked 10 legacy items which were to be disposed of in line with the WEEE Directive.

Even with the short down time window of the F1 Summer Break, Red Bull were thoroughly prepared technically for the project, and with clear communication and planning between Technimove and Red Bull the project was success being completed on time and without issue.
